Atari Teenage Riot Lands Euro Nine Inch Nails Dates

By Troy J. Augusto for CDNow All Star Music News on November 1, 1999

German techno crew Atari Teenage Riot, who recently wrapped a short headlining European tour in support of their latest album 60 Second Wipeout, has been tapped as the opening act on nine upcoming Nine Inch Nails dates in Europe, beginning Nov. 14 in Barcelona, Spain.

But it's unclear whether the controversial group's MC, Carl Crack, who missed all of the band's recent tour, will be able to make these new dates, either.

Crack (real name Carl Bohm) is currently fighting efforts by German authorities to have him incarcerated or institutionalized, following an incident last month at an airport in Frankfurt, Germany when he attempted to disembark from a plane through the emergency hatch while it was racing down the runway for takeoff.

He then reportedly assaulted the flight attendant who tried to stop him, forcing the pilot to abort takeoff and return the plane to the gate, at which point Crack and his bandmates were shown the way off at the proper exit. No charges have yet been filed. Band leader Alec Empire released a statement this week which reads, in part, "Carl has been suffering from a strong psychosis. It has happened a few times... most of the time it results from the consumption of marijuana, or an extreme feeling of euphoria that causes a chemical reaction in his brain and leads to a change of personality which shares many of the symptoms of schizophrenia."

Atari Teenage Riot will appear on the following Nine Inch Nails European tour dates::
  • Nov. 14, Barcelona, Spain, Pabellon Valle Hebron
  • Nov. 19, Munich, Germany, Colosseum
  • Nov. 20, Vienna, Austria, Libro Music Hall
  • Nov. 22, Berlin, Columbiahalle
  • Nov. 23, Copenhagen, Denmark, KB Halle
  • Nov. 25, Paris, Zenith
  • Nov. 26, Dusseldorf, Germany, Stahlwerk
  • Nov. 28, Tilburg, The Netherlands, 013
  • Nov. 29, London, Brixton Academy
