The first taste of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' soundtrack for The Social Network

I have to admit, sometimes we post stuff on Twitter and I forget to follow up right away on our actual webpage. Such was the case when the official website for The Social Network went online. Of interest to you, dear reader, is the background music, which some initially speculated was Nine Inch Nails. What little obfuscation there was in the Flash files was no match for NIN fans, who quickly traced the audio back to an MP3 hosted on Sony Pictures' website, titled "Hand Covers Bruise (no piano)" and credited to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. You can listen to a stream at Antiquiet, who give a shout to OneThirtyBPM for Jordan Raup's link, which Mr. Raup first posted first on The Film Stage. In the unlikely event that Sony takes the MP3 down from their site, you can download it from OneThirtyBPM.

Thanks to AcolorfulmonstR and Tony B for sending in the news.

More on the 1993 Tsukamoto/NIN Collaboration

Yesterday, a package arrived at my doorstep, delivered from Hong Kong. Within it was an unopened, limited edition Shinya Tsukamoto Laserdisc box set from the mid-90s. Considering that I don't know any Japanese, and don't have a laserdisc player, this is kind of a weird thing to have bought. However, the reason I picked it up is because on the fourth disc, Tsukamoto's MTV promo clip, which we only discovered the existence of this year - which has a soundtrack penned by Nine Inch Nails. Yes, I paid an embarrassing price for 50 seconds of video on a Laserdisc, but in a way, you paid for it if you'd ever bought anything from our Goodrock store or our merch page.

Anyway, on with the content! I'll be sending the box to our resident archivist, ItsJustDave, so we can extract the video and audio, but in the meantime, I've located the paragraph in the 24 page booklet that came with the box set (boxed set?) which gives some background on the clip. You can read the original Japanese alongside a photo from the shoot in this massive scan I made.

If you can read Japanese as well as I can, here's a translation graciously provided by nofrills (deconstructer):

5) MTV JAPAN Original Station ID <1993/VTR/50 seconds>

Made by Tsukamoto Shinya as the first-ever station ID for MTV Japan, this video was called "TOH (Top of the Hour)". It was used from September 1993 til August 1994.

So far, a number of famous film-makers have made the TOH in the US. This time - exclusively for MTV Japan - Nine Inch Nails, who had been asking Tsukamoto to do their promotional video, penned the music. With this familiar melody [sic] by NIN, the video almost feels like a scene from the movie Tetsuo.

The film won the Station/Network ID award at New York Festival 1994. [The copywriter fails to mention "who", but somebody] attended the ceremony and got tumultuous applause.

MTV Europe started using this TOH video in February 1994 for the opening title of the Rock Block programme.

I'm not sure when we'll get around to making a high quality rip of the video clip, but keep your eyes peeled here (or follow us on Twitter) and one of these days we'll link you to what we've found. I'm pretty sure its' going to be much higher quality than the clip on Youtube.

Unedited footage of NIN's 1991 Phoenix Lollapalooza gig on MTV.com

On account of the Friday kickoff of this year's Lollapalooza, MTV is digging into their vaults and pulling up footage from the festival from years past. Today James Montgomery posted a piece on Nine Inch Nails' first ever Lollapalooza gig, including a low-res video of things taking a turn for the worse right as Sin starts up. A clip from this show has been shown before on MTV, usually tied in with an interview with Trent about how the heat was messing with the equipment, but this may be the first time this much of the footage is being shown. Props to MTV for learning to get out of the way of the music.

You can also find two photos of Trent on the '91 Lollapalooza tour at the very beginning of this related photo gallery.

Hallo Spaceboy and Hurt, as performed by David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails

The first concert I'd ever attended was Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie at the Nissan Pavilion in 1995, with Prick opening the show. We got seats in the back of the pavilion, and even though the show was awesome (they played Closer to God!) my view was definitely lacking. Time went on, other tours came and went, but even with the release of Closure, there didn't seem to be any decent photos or video recordings from the tour, even amongst bootleggers. The first high quality video from around this time that emerged was the Night of Nothing DVD uploaded to The Pirate Bay near the end of 2007. I personally had given up seeking out anything from this tour, despite the unusual setlist.

So it's with great delight that I share with you these pro-shot videos with stereo soundboard audio, which showed up on Vimeo and have been sitting there quietly for two months before someone brought them to our attention. Note how in "Hallo Spaceboy" you've got both Chris Vrenna and Charlie Clouser on drums, with pretty much all of Bowie's band on stage accompanying NIN. What an awesome show. Anyway, without any further ado:

David Bowie: "HALO SPACE BOY" from video on Vimeo.

David Bowie and NIN: "Hurt" from video on Vimeo.

Director/Editor David Williams has a couple more videos from the tour on his Vimeo page, and we've reached out to him in the hopes that he's got even more footage to make available.

How To Destroy Angels CD is out now

Today marks the release of the CD version of the How to Destroy Angels debut EP. According to the official Twitter account, details regarding the vinyl edition will be available in the near future. On a related note, fouchnickens posted a link on ETS to this new interview with Mariqueen. We'll update later on as we get pictures of the packaging of this release, which some have noted is marked as "sigil 2" along the bottom of the spine...

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross score David Fincher's new film

From the nin.com news feed...

I was planning on taking some time off after the continual waves of touring that ended last fall and spend this year experimenting around with what would become How To Destroy Angels and some new NIN. Well, that plan didn't work out so well. David Fincher started inquiring about my interest in scoring his upcoming film, The Social Network. Yeah, the movie about the founding of Facebook. I've always loved David's work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story. When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned. Atticus Ross and I have been on a creative roll so I asked him if he wanted to work on this with me and we signed on.

Months later, I'm happy to tell you we're nearing the completion of this and I couldn't be happier with how it's turned out. The level of excellence that David operates on is inspiring and the entire process has been challenging and truly enjoyable.

As Atticus and I near the end of the scoring process, we're looking forward to the next phase - distilling the large amount of music we've written for this down to a satisfying record (or two). The film opens Oct 1 in the US with the record likely available a couple of weeks ahead of that.

Speaking of the film... it's really fucking good. And dark!

Free Amanda Palmer/EvelynEvelyn tickets + swag, woo!

We're taking a quick break from our usual news to talk up one of our pals and give you the chance to win stuff, because I love it when we can set people up with contest booty.

Back when "With Teeth" came out, Trent hand-picked a little-known band by the name of The Dresden Dolls as direct support for NIN's first tour since 2002. Since then, The Dolls' drummer (Brian Viglione) has performed on the Nails album GHOSTS, and vocalist/pianist/songwriter/"punk cabaret force of nature" Amanda Palmer has been out promoting her debut solo album (Who Killed Amanda Palmer) amongst other things.

Next month, she's set to release her first label-free-album, Amanda Palmer Performs The Popular Hits Of Radiohead On Her Magical Ukulele (the first single is available now at Bandcamp), but first she has a tour to wrap up...

There are just a few more nights of the run left (with Evelyn Evelyn and special guests Jason Webley & Sxip Shirey) but if it's coming your way, you should try and hit them up...don't have tickets yet, you say? DC, Philadelphia, and Boston: WE'VE GOTCHA COVERED! (Or, well, a dozen or so of you)...

But wait, there's more: Even if you don't live near any of the shows/need tickets, Amanda will be giving one lucky person a signed/personalized copy of her Who Killed Amanda Palmer book (with original writings by Neil Gaiman) AND a signed copy of the Evelyn Evelyn 10" double-colored-vinyl (which also comes with one of those archaic CD things)...

All you have to do to enter for any of this stuff, is click on the appropriate button on the image map below and tweet the message that pops up on your Twitter account. We're giving away 2 pairs of tickets per show, as well as 2 SINGLE tickets in each city.
DC 2 TixDC 1 TicketPhilly 1 TicketBoston 1 TicketBoston 2 TixPhilly 2 TixWKAP Book & EE Vinyl

Please only enter for tickets if you're sure you can go to the show.
Winners will be notified day of show via the @AFPwire Twitter account, approximately 3 hours prior to doors. The book/vinyl winner will be notified Saturday evening via AFPwire (and we'll need you to respond quick so we can get your name for the personalization).

If you wish to slightly edit the tweet-text provided for you above, please make sure you keep the hash tag (#AFPninHL) and the links - that's part of how we'll be picking winners.

Thank you all, and good luck.

P.S. If you wanna go to one of those shows but aren't interested in this whole contest thing, tickets for all three nights are still currently available here.

And now, back to your regularly-scheduled Nine Inch Nails news.

HTDA: CD, Vinyl, Tshirts, posters, stickers, pre-orders

How to Destroy AngelsToday, it was announced on Twitter that their debut EP will be a free download on June 1st. Pre-ordering now gets you "The Believers" MP3 immediately. The How To Destroy Angels store just opened up, and though it is slammed at the moment, they're load-balancing the servers and you should be able to get an idea of what it looks like sooner than later. In the meantime, we found a link to the backend where you can pre-order without lag. And this would be that link. The hot commodity here will be the limited-to-120 hand-screenprinted tshirt package that's going for $50.

Scrapped AATCHB/The Fragile art makes its way online

The FragileShortly after the release of The Fragile, David Carson published a book of his photos titled Fotografiks, and included in this colorful collection were some of the source images that would end up being used in artwork associated with the double album. A few years later, Carson published Trek, where he included photos of alternate covers (and titles) for what would come to be known as "And All That Could Have Been."

Well, as is inevitable, some of this work has been put online. trollmanen has posted scans at this Flickr set, and check out more of Carson's work at his website, where you can occasionally pick up proofs and posters direct from the designer himself. Carson is rumored to be involved with the upcoming 'very limited' version of The Fragile.

Wired profiles the construction of HTDA's "The Believers"

In the June 2010 issue of Wired, Bryan Gardiner has a piece profiling what goes on in the studio during the making of a song by How to Destroy Angels. The text appears under a picture of Alan Moulder, Atticus Ross, Mariqueen, and Trent doing studio things in the studio.
Lots of musicians have studios; Trent Reznor has an alchemist’s laboratory. On hiatus from touring, the Nine Inch Nails frontman has stuffed a converted garage with blinking electronic doo-dads, from modded synthesizers and sequencers to archaic drum machines. Reznor is using all this gear for his new band, How to Destroy Angels. Here’s how one song off the group’s forthcoming EP evolved from a seeming cacophony of beats and weird noise into a dense, polyrhythmic track.

While I could certainly transcribe the rest of it, that wouldn't be especially fair to Bryan, so check it out at your nearest nin fan message board bookstore or newsstand.

Spin's 25th Anniversary Poll severely lacking in NIN content

SpinOver at spin.com, Spin magazine is celebrating their 25th Anniversary with radio buttons, checkboxes and text inputs! "Pick your favorite band, album, movie, and song of the SPIN era" reads the headline, and while you can select Nine Inch Nails as best band, The Downward Spiral as best album, and Trent Reznor for, uh, "Hottest Sex God," they're missing from "Best Live Act," which borders on absurd. There is, however, a write-in vote, and I encourage you to go and write them in as the best live act, if you get a few moments to fill this puppy out. They don't ask for an email address or anything, but they wisely added a captcha to potentially thwart script-kiddies from busting this poll.

id software to pursue Trent Reznor for Doom 4 sound?

Nine Inch Nails and id Software have had quite a history, going back to the NIN logo appearing in the overhead map of one of the levels on The Ultimate Doom back in 1995. In 1996, id Software released Quake, with a soundtrack credited to Nine Inch Nails, and with ammo boxes for the nail gun weapon bearing the NIN logo. I could continue to rehash the history, but then I'd take the air out of this article at zConnection, which similarly pads their story with history in order to fill out this basic bit of news:
While we’ve been told to expect no official news on Bethesda and id Software’s upcoming Doom 4 until QuakeCon 2010, which will take place from August 12 to August 15, a reliable source has informed us that id are attempting to sign on Nine Inch Nails’ frontman Trent Reznor as sound engineer for the project.

Emphasis ours. Hopefully with bad managers out of the way, this time a proper collaboration can happen.
