The NIN Hotline Interviews CX KiDTRONiK

Many of you saw CX KiDTRONiK perform live with Saul Williams, who opened for Nine Inch Nails during the summer 2005 tour in Europe and the spring 2006 tour in the United States. According to his myspace profile, CX KiDTRONiK's role with Saul Williams can be described as "DJ/Live beat blaster and co-vocalist." We were impressed with the energy CX KiDTRONiK brought to Williams's set; each performance was different and exciting, with CX bouncing around behind the drum machines while Saul rapped. So we didn't hesitate to RSVP in the affirmative when CX recently dropped us a line on myspace (you can check out his myspace profile at http://www.myspace.com/cxkidtronik) and invited us to the release party for his new album, KRAK ATTACK (now available for purchase online by clicking here.)

We met up with CX at the party at the Delancey Lounge, a club on Manhattan's Lower East Side. As we lounged around waiting for the live performances to begin, a video played showing footage of Williams and CX performing. It then cut to scenes from a hotel room, where Williams and CX were working on new music with Trent Reznor. I later asked CX about Trent's involvement in Saul Williams's new album. "Trent hooked us up with some heavy shit," CX said.

A few days after the party, which included an inspired performance by CX and a number of other artists, I asked CX about doing an interview for the Hotline and he agreed. So without further ado...

1. So how did you and Saul Williams hook up with Nine Inch Nails in the first place?

TRENT SAW THE VIDEO FOR "LIST OF DEMANDS," AND PICKED UP A PHONE.

2. What was it like touring with NIN?

IT WAS THE BEST. MY FIRST BIG ARENA TOUR. I SAW THE KISS DYNASTY TOUR IN A BIG OL HOCKEY ARENA WHEN I WAS 8.

3. Tell us about your background. Where did you grow up? What were your musical influences?

I AM FROM THE WORLD OF ZERF IN THE 5TH QUADRANT. I FIRST LANDED IN DETROIT, ROCK CITY. I HAVE LIVED IN NEW YORK, WISCONSIN, AND ATLANTA.
EVERYTHING INFLUENCES THE MUSIC, BUT IF I WERE TO NAME TWO GROUPS, IT WOULD BE KISS, AND MANTRONIX.

4. I saw on your myspace profile that you worked with Saul Williams in the early 90's in Atlanta in the group K.I.N. How did that come about? Did you continue to work together through the 90's?

SAUL AND I WENT TO THE SAME 14TH AND 15TH GRADE SCHOOL TOGETHER, AND HE USED TO BE A DANCER/HYPEMAN IN THE GROUP K.I.N. THAT STAGE SHOW ALSO FEATURED A MAN WITH AN AX, 3 SMALL TRAMPOLINES WE WOULD JUMP AROUND ON, AND A WHIPPING WHITE SLAVEMASTER. I DIDN'T WORK WITH SAUL IN THE LATE 90'S.

5. What was it like to work with Trent on Saul Williams's new album? What kind of heavy shit did he hook you guys up with? Does Trent perform at all in any of the new material?

IT WAS COOL TO COLLAB WITH TRENT AND SAUL. THE HEAVY SHIT WAS THE BIG THICK BASS, LOUD DRUMS, WIDE SONIC SOUNDSCAPES, AND POWER BALLADS. YES, TRENT DOES PERFORM IN THE NEW SONGS.

6. Let's talk about your new album, KRAK ATTACK. Although there's a detailed and comprehensive history of the KRAK on your myspace profile, could you tell our readers, in a nutshell, about the KRAK?

IT'S THE DESTROYER. THE ILLER KILLER. WE ARE CELEBRATING THE 5TH YEAR NOW OF THE KRAK TAKEOVER, AND THE BEAUTIFUL LADIES OF LOW-RISE. AND NOW - ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMERTIME, THE EYES AND MIND ARE CONSTANTLY BOMBARDED WITH KRAK. I LIKE TO LICK IT, AND GET THAT NUMB FEELING ON MY TONGUE.

7. What is the K.W.O. (KRAK WORLD ORDER)? Is the K.W.O. a threat to humanity or is it the only thing that will save us from total annhiliation?

IT'S THE SECRET GOVERNMENT, SO I REALLY CAN'T SPEAK ON IT, AND THERE IS NO SAVING US. WE ARE DOOMED. OUTER SPACE IS THE ONLY NEXT MOVE. I HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED LAND ON THE MOON MYSELF. I CALL IT KRAKADELPHIA, EVEN THOUGH THE LOW GRAVITY THERE WILL HELP THE LADIES.

8. George W. Bush: friend or enemy of the KRAK?

I DON'T TRUST POLITICS, SO, WHATEVER. THANKFULLY, NONE OF THE PROPOSED "DROOPY DRAWERS" LAWS WERE PASSED IN VIRGINIA AND LOUISIANA - WHICH WOULD HAVE GIVEN PEOPLE $50.00 FINES FOR KRAK HAPPENINGS.

BUSH CAN'T STOP KRAK.

9. So where can our readers catch you performing live this summer?

STAY TUNED TO THE "UPCOMING SHOWS" LIST ON MY MYSPACE PAGE. I UPDATE IT EVERY WEEK. THIS MONTH: FINLAND AND SOUTH AFRICA WITH SAUL. NYC WITH MY PARTNERS E.K.G., AND JASON BK (DEUCE GANGSTA), AND THE KRAKANAUTS - FEMALE DANCERS.

10. So why should NIN Hotline readers listen to KRAK ATTACK?

BECAUSE IT'S PART OF THE PUZZLE.

11. Anything else you'd like our readers to know about or check out?

YEAH - LADIES, WE'RE NOW ACCEPTING KANDID KRAK PHOTO SUBMISSIONS FOR THE NEXT ALBUM COVER: "KRAK ATTACK 2: BACK KRAK WITH A VENGEANCE" (WHICH WILL FEATURE A SONG CALLED "MR SELF DESTRUCT PT 2" BY ME AND TRENT REZNOR.) EMAIL PICS TO CXKIDTRONIK@CXKIDTRONIK.COM. I ALSO WANT ALL Y'ALL OUT THERE TO STAY TUNED, WE STILL GOT THE "KRAKFEST" DVD COMING, THE KRAK ATTACK BOOTY-BURNER HOTSAUCE,
I ALSO HAVE DIFFERENT KRAKHEAD LOGO T-SHIRTS IN THE WORKS.

The NIN Hotline would like to thank CX KiDTRONiK for doing this interview. Be sure to check out his new album, KRAK ATTACK, which can be purchased for only eight bucks at this link. And be sure to catch CX KiDTRONiK on stage this summer! ** Attention NIN fans in NYC: you should definitely plan on attending CX's show at the Delancey Lounge this Sunday, July 2nd! **

Stop asking Rykodisk if they'll do PHM Deluxe

Here's an update from Rykodisc regarding our previous post...

Thanks for your posting. We absolutely recognize the desire of NiN fans (ourselves included!) to have deluxe expanded release(s) of Pretty Hate Machine.

However, the ability to move this forward is very complicated and does not just rest on Rykodisc writing Trent a check to do the work. If it were that simple, we'd be much closer to realizing a deluxe PHM. As you can imagine from history, the issues surrounding PHM are complicated. Trent and his management understand that there are other factors at work, and have been very cordial & friendly to Rykodisc throughout the process of re-releasing PHM. We continue to make efforts to to untie the tangles.

As fans ourselves, we have speculated as to why certain projects by our favorite artists haven't yet come to fruition, and we appreciate that it is the enthusiasm for the artist's work that fuels these theories. However, in this case, the theory put forth is not what is holding the deluxe PHM back.

We appreciate your e-mail campaign, but since we cannot reply to everyone, we hope you will share our response on your site. Most people sent very nice e-mails, although a few ignored the advice and were insulting. Most of the people whose names & addresses you posted are no longer with the label, so we'd appreciate it if you removed the addresses.

Thanks for your interest. Keep watching our website for news.

See how cool they are? Don't send them angry emails. Actually, don't send them any emails anymore, it's safe to say they're aware of the demand, and when the situation is presentable, they'll present.

Ask Rykodisk if they'll do PHM Deluxe

Devlin Andersen sent me a link to this page about contacting Rkyodisk regarding a 5.1 Pretty Hate Machine. It's well written, and well reasoned, and certainly hopeful enough, so if you're interested in encouraging Rykodisc to hook Trent up with cash to re-mix the album, follow that link and do your part. C'mon, it'll be fun!

Band Madness Round 7: The Madness Continues

We've been informed by Curly21029 and FernDaBurn that Band Madness! has Round 7 up and running, with NIN taking on David Bowie. Currently, NIN is at 42% versus Bowie's 58%. So go vote for NIN! Or David Bowie! Or both! I really don't care.

There Is No Bleeping You

The Indianapolis radio station X-103 is holding an "Only" remix contest for a pair of tickets and invites to the Meet & Greet at the July 3rd show. You can find more details here. (Looks like they got the date of the show wrong.) Rather amusingly, they request that all contestants "Please edit out cuss words in your mixes - we'd like to play the winner's mix on the air." Thanks to Starfukkar for writing in.

Unreleased Error Track Now Available

A previously unreleased cover song by the group Error, "Wild World," is now available on the tribute album Release the Bats: The Birthday Party (available for purchase on Amazon as well as iTunes). Just to remind you, Error is a collaboration between Atticus Ross from NIN, his brother Leo, Greg Puciato from Dillinger Escape Plan, and Brett Gurewitz from Bad Religion. They released a totally kick-ass EP a while back that's well worth checking out if you haven't already. For instance, the EP reportedly gives Leviathant major wood every time he listens to it, which is often. Thanks to John for writing in.

*update* nincollector.com is moving to burning souls

I've received a few questions about the status of nincollector.com, which recently stopped working altogether. Yes, the site is completely down.

I kinda forgot that Jay DeBard from Burning Souls is going to be absorbing the contents of the site into Burning Souls, so while the information is currently offline, this is only temporary, and it is finding its way to a new home at buringsouls.com

A few months ago, it was announced that the fellow running the site was going to be giving up ownership, and I immediately sought to take it over, as I have done with many other sites whose owners have otherwise lost interest in maintaining. While I was initially in good standing to take over maintenance of the site, somewhere along the line it was decided that someone else would maintain it better than I could.

Now the site is completely offline. Don't sweat it though... I've been talking with some of the more hardcore collectors about putting together a replacement site, without ridiculous watermarks, and including work outside of the NIN discography. I think it's a shame that a good domain name went to waste like that, and we probably could have saved a lot of time if we worked together, but that's not going to get in the way of the creation of something better.

Dillinger Escape Plan EP includes cover of Wish

Normally I avoid posting about other bands covering Nine Inch Nails, because bands really suck at playing NIN songs. I haven't heard their version yet, but because I like The Dillinger Escape Plan, I'm letting you know that they released an iTunes only EP yesterday that includes, among five other tracks, a studio recording of their cover of Wish. Thanks to Agent for the reminder.

Update on Reznor/El-P collaboration

As we reported at the end of March, Reznor is guest starring on El-P's next album "I'll Sleep When You're Dead". According to El-P's Myspace (via billboard.com) the track will be called "Flyentology". Remember kids, sending the Hotline permalinks earns you XP.

Trent & Peter Murphy Radio Performances

Tune into 99x right now as Trent Reznor and Peter Murphy duet a number of NIN & Bauhaus songs, uncensored & everything. Murphy's currently singing Hurt as Trent backs him on Piano, in front of a small audience. It's kind of neat.

From the official Bauhaus website:
We are pleased to announce the first of five US radio performances tomorrow in Atlanta with Peter and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. They will be doing a set just before the show at the Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheatre at 5 pm and you can tune in via streaming audio on 99x (WNNX).

Other performances will be (times to be announced):

June 13: Washington DC - DC101
June 23: Boston, MA - WBCN, WFNX, WAAF
July 1: Chicago, IL - Q101
July 8: San Francisco, CA - KITS (Live105)

So if you missed out today, there are more shows coming up that you should be able to catch.

Band Madness Round 6: NIN vs Radiohead

A whole bunch of people have been frantically emailing in to let us know that NIN are losing to Radiohead in the latest Band Madness poll. In a battle to the death, could NIN feasibly beat Radiohead? Who knows (although it's not like Mr Yorke's been to the gym recently)! But this is the internet, and all you guys have to do is click a button - so let's see what happens.

Thanks to everyone who let us know about this!

Tour merchandise snapshot

It was mentioned on The Spiral that the merchandise for this tour was designed by none other than The Designers Republic, who've done work for the likes of WARP Records and the like. It's worth noting that this isn't the first time TDR has worked on NIN -- they also designed the artwork for the Sin single.

Anyhow, the point of this post is that Clocksrun from ETS (and apparently no one else) took a bunch of pictures of the merch booth posted photos on ETS that Fullmetal had taken & put on The Spiral, so now you have an idea of what will be there. I chopped them up and put them into a hastily-laid-out collage that you can view by clicking the thumbnail above.
